UWA Uniswim has a number of squads to suit any level of competent swimmer.
Outlined below is a summary of each squad level and training times.
We also provide the opportunity for our swimmers to compete in carnivals, held at UWA Uniswim, once a season.
You should be aware that a squad can operate only if sufficient swimmers have enrolled and our squads are run over the summer and winter seasons.. All our squads swim at UWA unless specifically designated at Challenge Stadium. All prices include GST.
Children are assessed as a 'Tadpole' when they can complete:
The Tadpole squad is an introductory squad. Swimming in lanes, the children continue their work on their breaststroke, backstroke and freestyle while developing the vital quality of endurance. They also learn freestyle turns, breaststroke turns, use of the pacing clock and the training "rules of the pool".
Once the basic skills have been consolidated at Tadpole level, swimmers are promoted to sub-junior squads, where it is suggested that they swim twice a week for 45 minutes.
While the main objective of this squad is still stroke development, an increasing emphasis is placed on improving endurance. Sub-Juniors are introduced to butterfly, breaststroke split-strokes and backstroke turns.
Junior swimmers should attend at least two one-hour sessions a week.
The additional session considerably develops endurance and speed, and facilitates the introduction of more advanced skills such as medley turns and bent arm backstroke. At this level, swimmers are encouraged to join the UWA Uniswim Swimming Club for some friendly competition.
For entry to the Intermediate squad, swimmers are expected to be competent in all four strokes (including the appropriate turns and starts).
Intermediate squads are expected to swim three 1.5 hour sessions a week. At this level, we stress technique consolidation, fitness development and improving race skills. Swimmers are also encouraged to join the UWA Uniswim Swimming Club and compete at various inter-club and club competitions throughout the season.
The national development and national squads will continue through the school holidays due to the competition schedule.
Subject to the competition calendar, consideration will be given to having some time off from training. Swimmers will be adviced of this date by the coach.
*Includes Dry Land Program. Appropriate clothing and footwear must be worn at all times.
The season dates for the national age squad are slightly different. You should check with the national coach.
All UWA Uniswim children swimming at Challenge Stadium will be issused with a card which allows free entry for training times only. These cards will be activated and can be collected from the front desk at Challenge Stadium.
Note: For the dry land program appropriate clothing and footwear must be worn at all times.
